Is taking Spanish in high school necessary?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to make my high school course plan, and I was wondering if it's required or strongly recommended to take Spanish in high school for college admissions? I'm more interested in other languages, but I don't want to hinder my college options.

While taking Spanish in high school is not specifically required for college admissions, most colleges do expect applicants to have some level of proficiency in a foreign language. Generally, selective schools recommend at least two to four years of study in the same language. It certainly does not have to be Spanish; you could choose any other language that better aligns with your interests, and that would be completely fine for college admissions.

The key is to show a commitment and dedication to learning a language throughout your high school career—it doesn't matter if it's Spanish, French, German or any other language your school offers. Demonstrating consistency in your chosen language will reflect well on your application. Additionally, studying a language that genuinely interests you will keep you engaged and motivated, which might even result in better grades or extracurricular opportunities.

Ultimately, the language you choose to study in high school should reflect your personal interests and not be selected based solely on perceived college admissions preferences. By focusing on a language that you're passionate about, you'll be able to demonstrate dedication and commitment in your application, which can only help your chances of admission.
